The majority of the floor plans used in construction activities are paper based. Paper floor plans take a beating at a construction site, and, making copies for the various contractors at a building site can be daunting. Using digital copies of floor plans can be an effective way to overcome the flaws associated with managing paper floor plans.

There are also numerous benefits associated with digital floor plans. A few of these benefits include:

  • Ability to share floor plans simply via web links.
  • Ability to visualize and share construction activity status directly on the floor plan.  Great for project managers.
  • Ability to create and manage construction punch lists.
  • Ability to add detailed features to floor plans for final inspections.  For example,  damaged building components (e.g. repair broken window, replace stained wallboard, repair cracked paving, etc.), or problems with the final installation of building materials or equipment (e.g. reinstall peeling carpet, replace missing roof shingles, fire and pressure test boiler, obtain elevator use permit, activate security system, etc.) can easily be visualized on an interactive floor plan.  Photos can be attached, then shared with pertinent parties.

In current versions of Floor Plan Mapper, when searching for an employee, a callout window pointing to the employees location pops up, displaying the employee attributes read from the Windows Active Directory.

However, if the name of the employee is unknown, it was difficult to find out who an employee was, and where they were located. Using the latest version of Floor Plan Mapper, the interactive floor plan is now “live”, that is, when you hover over an office, the employees name will show up in a tooltip. Clicking on an office will popup a window displaying the employee attributes/photo queried live from the Windows Active Directory.

Sounds a bit Big Brotherish, wouldn’t you say? Well, perhaps not. There are many real world applications for tracking indoor movements on an interactive floor plan. For example, tracking patients in a hospital, or, tracking scientists in high security areas. In the past, technology limited real time accurate indoor positioning. However, there are now presently various ways to track a person or asset or equipment in a indoor system. Nokia and Navteq are a couple of the industry leaders with respect to indoor positioning:

The way to truly bring value to indoor positioning is to couple the real time location data with an interactive floor plan.     • University Campus Directions – One of the major problems with regards to navigating around Universities is the high turn over of students.  New students need an easy way to find their way around a campus.  The University of Calgary have provided their students with an easy to use, interactive campus map:
    • Warehouse Inventory Mapping – A warehouse floor plan is a efficient media for managing inventory locations.  By interactively displaying product inventory locations, warehouse managers can quickly find the location of the product they are looking for.
